Kitty Breakfast Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 3 eggs
  • 2 T. milk
  • 3 T. grated cheese
  • 1 T. margarine

Preparation & Cooking

  1. Beat eggs and yolks together. Stir in the grated cheese.
  2. Melt the margarine in a frying pan until sizzling.
  3. Add the egg mixture, stirring continuously until cooked.

Note:

Many cats are lactose-intolerant, which means that they cannot digest cow's milk properly and they get diarrhea or gastric upset when they drink it.

According to the ASPCA, "Unless they are spoiled or moldy, milk, cheese and other dairy foods are not considered to be poisonous to pets. However, many pets’ digestive systems cannot tolerate dairy foods very well. This can result in vomiting and diarrhea, which in severe cases could lead to inflammation of the pancreas. For this reason, it’s always a good idea to check with your veterinarian before offering any “people food” to your pets."

One alternative is using lactose-free milk in recipes, which you can find in pet stores.

Foods Your Cat Should Never Eat

Dangerous Foods?

Because they're such picky eaters, we sometimes think cats know what’s best for them when it's time to eat. But the fact they'll walk away from a piece of bad meat doesn't mean they'll bypass an open can of tuna. And that can of tuna can be just as dangerous. In fact, you may be surprised to learn some of the common foods your cats should never eat.

Kitty Kibbles

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 cups soy flour
  • 1 cup wheat germ
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup nonfat dry milk
  • 1/2 cup brewer's yeast
  • 1 (15 ounce) can mackerel
  • 5 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon cod liver oil
  • 2 cups of water or as needed

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Mix all the dry ingredients in a large bowl. In another bowl, mash the mackerel into small pieces. Mix in the oil and water. Add the mackerel mixture to the dry ingredients and mix thoroughly. The dough is tough, so use your hands.

Roll dough out to about 1/4" thickness and cut into 1/4" bits, using a knife or pizza cutter. Mound the bits onto greased cookie sheets and bake for 25 minutes.

During baking, occasionally toss the bits with two wooden spoons, so they brown evenly. Turn the heat off and allow the treats to cool thoroughly before removing and storing in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

This recipe freezes very well for longer storage.

Yummy Cat Food

Image Credit:  A Path With Paws

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups raw or lightly cooked ground meat (beef, chicken, turkey, or lamb)
  • 1 cup raw or slightly cooked organ meat (kidney, liver, heart, lung)
  • 1 raw turkey neck, ground or finely chopped (be sure not to cook)
  • 1 cup well-cooked grain (oats, rice, barley or cornmeal)
  • ½ cup well cooked vegetable (broccoli, zucchini, carrots, squash or green beans)
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil or flax seed oil

Preparation & Cooking

Mix all ingredients together, and then divide into individual portions.

The less you cook the ingredients, the more nutritious it will be for your cat. If you freeze the individual portions, they will keep for several weeks and you can defrost one a day. When thawing, try not to use the microwave or another cooking method, since this will reduce nutrient levels. Instead, let food thaw overnight in the refrigerator. To warm it, place the food in a plastic bag with zipper closure, then immerse the bag into hot (not boiling) water for 10 minutes.

The amount of food prepared with this recipe should last for about 5 days for a adult cat of normal size. Your cat may eat more or less at each meal; use common sense to decide on serving size. Because this mixture is slightly lower in calories than dry cat food, you will need to serve slightly more of it in comparison.

Homemade Kitten Food for Weaning off Mother's Milk

Ingredients:

1 Package Unflavored Gelatin
1 1/2 Cups Water
1 12 Ounce Can Goat's Milk
3 Tbsp Full Fat Yogurt
3 Tbsp Real Mayonnaise
3 Tsp Light Corn Syrup
1 Raw Egg Yolk

Directions:

Bring water to a boil, then remove from heat and mix in gelatin until thoroughly dissolved. Do not boil the gelatin.

Pour mixture into blender with half of the milk, then mix on low until combined. It should only take a few seconds to combine everything thoroughly.

Add remaining ingredients one at a time, mixing after each one until thoroughly combined before adding the next. Keep the speed on low, and be careful to not pulverize too fine.

Serve your completed homemade kitten food as is, or stored for later usage. Just cover tightly and store in the refrigerator for up to ten days, or freeze for up to three months.

Warm your homemade kitten food slightly before serving, especially if it is coming from the refrigerator or freezer. Kittens are used to milk being warm, and cold food can cause upset stomach.
